Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS) is a charitable organisation that provides essential support to those facing hardship across the UK and internationally. Established in October 2013 in Walsall, West Midlands, by CEO Randhir Singh, the charity was inspired by the Sikh principle of “Langar,” which refers to a community kitchen that serves free meals to anyone, regardless of their social status, race, religion, or background.
The organisation’s mission is rooted in the Sikh ethos of selfless service and inclusivity. MLSS operates on the belief that everyone deserves access to basic necessities, such as food and shelter. The charity’s efforts focus on providing hot meals to vulnerable populations, including the homeless, individuals in schools and safe houses, and those living on the poverty line. This service is extended to all without prejudice, reflecting the inclusive nature of the Sikh faith.
Since its founding, MLSS has seen remarkable growth. Initially starting as a local initiative in Walsall, the charity has expanded its operations to major cities across the UK, including Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester, and London. This expansion has allowed MLSS to reach and support over 30,000 people in need weekly. The organisation’s success is attributed to its passionate and dedicated team of over 900 volunteers, who selflessly donate their time and resources to assist others.
MLSS has also developed strong partnerships with a wide range of organisations. By collaborating with other charities, businesses, and government and religious institutions, MLSS has been able to amplify its impact and effectiveness. These partnerships are crucial in tackling issues such as homelessness and food insecurity, as they enable the sharing of resources and expertise.
The work of Midland Langar Seva Society goes beyond just providing meals. It aims to foster a sense of community and belonging among those it serves, offering a compassionate and supportive environment. The charity’s activities are a practical demonstration of Sikh values in action, striving to create a more equitable and compassionate society. Through its efforts, MLSS not only addresses immediate needs but also advocates for long-term solutions to the social issues affecting the most vulnerable populations in the UK.
